That’s not what populism is. Populism is racist, nativist, protectionist fantasy politics. Stop trying to make it something it isn’t. Take some fucking responsiblity for spreading that evil.

Fun fact: original populists in 19th century America were a bi-racial coalition that in fact fought for black equality in the face of brutal Jim Crow system.

I think the problem is to refute your review would require you reading some books: Michael Kazin's The Populist Persuasion, John Judis' The Populist Explosion for a start. I'd also add that the main racists in American history have been anti-populist elitists.

You're just demonstrating you don't understand how to engage in scholarly dialogue w/ all of this. You're cherry-picking literature that conforms to your beliefs. Also, it's false that the "main racists in American history" have been anti-populist elitists.

The systems of slavery and Jim Crow were not set up by populists but rather by people who were squarely in the elite consensus of liberalism & conservatism (from Locke to Woodrow Wilson).

Are you suggesting that there was significant Southern white popular resistance to Jim Crow laws? That Jim Crow passed DESPITE Southern white people largely being against it?

There doesn't have to be significant popular resistance (although C. Vann Woodward & others have found some). If the racism was run by elite class & shared by all classes of white society, then it can't be called populist.

I think you're running into an axiom of (some parts of) the modern left's historical analysis: That (almost) everything bad is something done BY elites TO 'the people.' It works in many cases obviously, but it can kinda become an article of faith that can't be challenged.

That's not true. You can have a society where racism persists among upper classes that also have racist populist movements (every Western society).

It can if populism amplifies it, and if the elite class only uses inherent racism to manipulate and enflame the populace as the GOO has been doing. Racism is a wedge because it already has broad appeal among non-elites
