That’s not what populism is. Populism is racist, nativist, protectionist fantasy politics. Stop trying to make it something it isn’t. Take some fucking responsiblity for spreading that evil.

Fun fact: original populists in 19th century America were a bi-racial coalition that in fact fought for black equality in the face of brutal Jim Crow system.

I think the problem is to refute your review would require you reading some books: Michael Kazin's The Populist Persuasion, John Judis' The Populist Explosion for a start. I'd also add that the main racists in American history have been anti-populist elitists.

Hofstadter's views on populism are widely regarded as discredited by experts in the field. For a quick summary of a vast literature see here:https://issforum.org/roundtables/policy/1-5an-paranoid …

That’s extremely not true and I’m literally a college professor in US history. I wrote a sourced thread on the literature. I don’t need a lit review from you

If you think Hofstadter is a reliable source on populism, good luck to your students.

Really? Where did you get your PhD? What US history classes have you taught? I mean you must have some qualification that makes you determine that I’m wrong

I don't think rank pulling solves the problem that you are misrepresenting the literature, as seen by Ribuffo's article (since Ribuffo certainly had a degree). I'll note that Hofstadter himself admitted that the criticism of Age of Reform was accurate (see David Brown's bio).
