One problem with anti-systems politics unmoored to class identity or coherent ideology is that when defeated it can easily move in a reactionary direction. Tom Watson (the original Tom Watson) is emblematic. We're seeing some of that in the dirtbag left today, alas.

Populism is a response to the failure of liberal systems: the substantive inequality produced by purported neutrality. But when a populist program fails politically, all that remains is anti-liberalism: hence the reactionary turn: the Tom Watson syndrome.

That’s not what populism is. Populism is racist, nativist, protectionist fantasy politics. Stop trying to make it something it isn’t. Take some fucking responsiblity for spreading that evil.

Fun fact: original populists in 19th century America were a bi-racial coalition that in fact fought for black equality in the face of brutal Jim Crow system.

Populist movements are often xenophobic, nationalistic, nativist, and racist while imagining a pure homogeneous morally good "people." /4

Speaking of BS, looking forward to your promised article on Arendt and Polanyi's overreaction to the Holocaust. I'm sure you'll have lots to say about Arendt's concept of "the mob" in Origins.

My “liberal bullshit” thread cites multiple respected historians and political scientists and discusses the academic consensus around populism. But sure

Academics have never been known to produce liberal bullshit? In any case, I'll stick with the fine scholarly work on American populism of Goodwyn, Nugent, Palmer etc.

Jeet, people disagree about the definition of populism. Many identify it as having racist or xenophobic traits. You're free to disagree w/ this definition, but calling it "liberal bullshit" is w/out basis. Historians have a good faith disagreement on this.

I mean if you're specifically talking about the 19th century it's really not worth much to "disagree" about the meaning of populism when there was a massive Populist movement with a semi-serious Presidential candidate and everything. Hell WJB won the *Democratic* nomination!
