One problem with anti-systems politics unmoored to class identity or coherent ideology is that when defeated it can easily move in a reactionary direction. Tom Watson (the original Tom Watson) is emblematic. We're seeing some of that in the dirtbag left today, alas.

Populism is a response to the failure of liberal systems: the substantive inequality produced by purported neutrality. But when a populist program fails politically, all that remains is anti-liberalism: hence the reactionary turn: the Tom Watson syndrome.

That’s not what populism is. Populism is racist, nativist, protectionist fantasy politics. Stop trying to make it something it isn’t. Take some fucking responsiblity for spreading that evil.

Fun fact: original populists in 19th century America were a bi-racial coalition that in fact fought for black equality in the face of brutal Jim Crow system.

Populist movements are often xenophobic, nationalistic, nativist, and racist while imagining a pure homogeneous morally good "people." /4

Fun fact: the first US populist movement was the group of aptly named "Know Nothings", an explicitly bigoted and racist group: https://www.history.com/topics/us-politics/populism-united-states-timeline#:~:text=One%20of%20the%20earliest%20populist%20political%20parties%20in,as%20the%20Order%20of%20the%20Star%20Spangled%20Banner ….

Early Populists were mostly indifferent to race, and then they mostly sold out to white supremacy extremely quickly (look at Tom Watson, notably)

Successful progressive populist movements are pretty rare. Right wing populist movements have been really popular. Fascism has a really good run and is making a big comeback.
