Seems like opposing marijuana legalization is an easy way for Biden to buy some centrist cred for the election -- like Obama initially opposing gay marriage -- that he can quickly "evolve" beyond once in office.

He would move it off schedule 1, end federal enforcement in states that legalize, expunge criminal records and decriminalize use. Not far enough in my view, but it would great if you could report facts instead of feelings.

If something is decriminalized, doesn't that make it legal by default? Regulation and taxation would be better.

Decriminalization means there can be fines and confiscations and organized commerce can be illegal, but if you're smoking a joint they'll give you a ticket not ruin your life. Even at that, they have an excuse to inspect you and give you grief, and tickets can be a big deal.

Also: Biden has spent a half-century perfectly in the middle of the Democratic party on every issue, even as that target has moved considerably. He still is. If you want him to be better on drug legalization, it's obvious has to be done: move the middle of the Democratic party.

And, no, he's not "more conservative than his party" on this issue. He's in the middle of it. Again.
