Concur. I wanted to enjoy Book of the New Sun and it came heavily recommended but it was a tedious read. Those AT books are a delight (as is most everything he's done, honestly).

A version of this also exists in A Memory Called Empire.

Came here to mention this book too. Written last year by a Ph. D. in Byzantine history who works as a city planner, it not only does interesting things with continuity of memory--it also creates a pop culture that feels like pop culture while also feeling alien.
