Yes, agreed. And Jesse Singal’s twitter commentary after it was published is a perfect illustration of the disconnect she outlines: many of the signers did so in good faith, and Jesse took the victory lap to troll harder, confirming the meta-analysis of the letter’s critics.
-
The fact that signers of the letter included multiple people infamous for silencing speech they don't like... and also the fact that the signers of the letter immediately started publicly shaming and ostracizing people about the letter... yeah the meta-analysis was spot on.

I'd be interested to hear when exactly in the past good faith debates were happening. While I think her argument that 'too online' subtextual readings can be difficult to understand isn't wrong if anything has changed it seems it's more-so the general number of people online
-
Good faith debates happened on BBs , AOL/irc chatrooms, and Internet Forums until about the early 2000s. We thought the internet would bring world peace. We were wrong. Back them people communicated based on hobby interest, so good faith was possible.

Her take offers a plausible excuse for why many not-very-online, well-meaning folks could've been duped into signing a bad letter for good reasons. No offense Jeet, but you're *extremely* online, so what's your excuse?
