another cool thing you could have done would have been to not sign the letter because the letter is actually bad

what does it mean then, Jeet? i truly do not understand what anyone who signed it actually *wants*, except to not be unpopular among people who believe that trans women are women and that there is no useful debate to be had over race science or the existence of racism

Jeet, if nothing else how can you not look at the list of other signatories and see what it is that they are signing on for. Does that not make you wonder about what it is you are endorsing?

I mean, that's all fair, but I think there's a lot more going on in the subtext of the letter here, and I'm not sure why you found it necessary to sign on.

I also was startled to see your name on it! this letters and others like it are generally the sort of thing that makes me reconsider a person's work. I don't mean that harshly, it's just mostly a collection of people who say dumb things and resent there being a cost involved

if you have to explicitly distance yourself from basically every position held by 75% of the people who signed that letter, maybe that should tell you something

you're getting ratio'd here, i'm very sorry that free debate is being stifled :(

i.e., JK Rowling, John McWhorter, David Frum, David Brooks, all people in the public square who wield influence but don't want to be responsible for the damage their casually tossed-off ideas might cause in the larger culture.

I've dunked on most of those people in the past, and will likely do so again in the future! (And also Rowling). I don't see the letter as saying they should get pushback for their noxious views.
