    1. With his speeches over the weekend, Trump is making it very clear he wants election to be about culture wars (he'll defend real Americans from Antifa statue-smashers, etc.). The problem for him is it makes him, uneasily, defender of status quo.

        2. Trump at Mr. Rushmore: "We declare that the United States of America is the most just and exceptional nation ever to exist on Earth.” But this message is in tension with the original Trump who won in 2016, whose message was America is going to hell in a handbasket.

        3. Running on a defense of American exceptionalism also seems of limited political value since the public is becoming very pessimistic about the country. An interesting recent poll said only 17% affirm USA is a "shining city on a hill" (even among GOP only 30%).pic.twitter.com/YrrJLCGT69

Doesn't the adoption of "Keep America Great" as a slogan already kinda do that?

Good point, except you spelled "defender of the Confederacy" slightly wrong.

He wants NO ELECTION. Trump WANTS Civil War II, to Stay in Office, to Stay Out of JAIL. He's betting on the bullets: a minority of well-armed Racists vs. a majority of unarmed Good People. Act Accordingly!!!!!

I don't think logical consistency is something Trump voters care about. I think it's more likely they enjoy the frissons of incompatible logic in the service of cultural power.
