People that talk about cancel culture fail to understand that our words and actions carry weight and are subject to social evaluation for good cause. Those proposals are great. But in the context of cancel culture, they'd just allow employers to deflect the pressure from those calling for termination onto whoever/whatever was preventing it (unions, for-cause employment provisions, etc.).

Right. I don’t immediately see why unions would be more likely to resist a social media pile-on. Maybe? but it’s not clear. Also, solving the problem by changing our mores about pile-ons (if possible) would have collateral benefits beyond preventing firings.
