One problem with Hamid's tweet is the model of friendship that underlies. I'm friends with Jacobites, anarcho-capitalists & Trots not for the sake of some ideal intellectual diversity but because I liked them & usually found out about their politics laterhttps://twitter.com/shadihamid/status/1277966905391759367 …

But also, as
@zachdcarter said: the "intellectual diversity" advocated here is incredibly narrow: center left & centrists befriending center-right (all working for think tanks and mainstream publications). The actual political spectrum is much largerhttps://twitter.com/shadihamid/status/1277966905391759367 …Show this thread -
Leaving Hamid out of this (because his politics are different) but a lot of chatter about intellectual diversity is about creating an elite united front of liberals & conservatives to fend off supposed extremists. This is the Hofstadter project from late 1940s & it's still bad

Are there still Stuart pretenders? Like is the heir to the line known?

I really don’t understand how you pull that off. But I have to say, I’m impressed by the Stuart revanchists. That’s deep.

If that’s so true then why are so many of us descended from charlemagne?
