1. One of the interesting things about Trump's tweet of the "white power" video is that the cultural civil war has spread inside The Villages, the massive Florida retirement communities that are the heartland of Trumpism.

2. As
@MikeGrunwald has wonderfully described, the Villages were crucial not just for Trump's victory in 2016 but the continuing dominance of the GOP in Florida. Huge retirement communities filled with people fearful of cultural and demographic change.pic.twitter.com/VrEmxD0jxf

3. Covid -- and Trump's botched response to it -- has made seniors a swing vote in a way they haven't been for last 2 decades. One big question in the election is what do older Americans fear more: covid-19 or people of color?

4. But having the 77-year-old Biden competing against the 74-year-old Trump for the senior vote does reinforces the feeling that America is becoming a gerontocracy: no country for young people but like the USSR of the 1970s dominated by an aging cadre stuck in the past.

Bernie Sanders is 78, an aging cadre stuck in a sclerotic ideology. Biden is wise enough to use his appeal to older voters to transition to a new generation.

Who is the one that overwhelmingly won the votes of people under 45 in the primaries?

Who catastrophically failed to turn out voters under 45 and lost support from 2016?

We can test Biden's appeal to voters under 45 in November. I predict that under 45 turnout will be higher than '12s 38%, and that Biden will win it by a larger margin than Obama 12's 57%.

Biden will win because Trump is widely hated. But the simple fact is that the Democrats are a gerontocracy (as seen not just by Biden but by congressional Dem leadership). This is very bad for the party and for America.

Kamala is 55, Booker is 51, Hakeem Jeffries is 49, Luján is 48. America is older and we live longer, but the Democratic caucus is not a gerontocracy.

"The average age of the Democratic House leadership is 72 years old, whereas the average age of Republican House leadership is 48 years old. This trend continues in House committee leadership with Republican chairmen averaging 59 years old and ranking Dem averaging 68 years old"
