Today's briefing by Mike Pence ("Fight covid with personal responsibility!" "But isn't Trump not taking personal responsibility by holding mass rallies?" "Freedom!") was a perfect performance of Frank Wilhoit's classic principle: (1/2)

"Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect." (2/2)

I love that this axiom seems to be from a blog post by someone using Wilhoit’s name as a pseudonym — so far as I know it’s never been traced in his books

He’s a solid historian of political theory who might have written that, but apparently didn’t. I wonder if the formula is actually adapted from Cory Robin’s argument in his conservatism book? which seemed a bit underthought to me but, I also like this aphorism as a rule of thumb!

It actually appears to be someone else with the same name who is a composer (and very occasional commentator at CT).

I feel like there was some podcast that investigated who Wilhoit was -- I should have book marked it. I wanted to give it a listen.
