Hofstadter argued culture war issues come to the fore in times of prosperity (1920s: prohibition, immigration etc) and wane in times of economic crisis (1930s). Not sure if that's 100% true but does explain why Trump is so flatfooted right now in use of culture war.

cultural wars are partially a question of distribution. that said, Trump's position is implausible.

Maybe Trump is, but I'm reading an awful lot of stories about statues right now.

It doesn't seem to fit the current era. Maybe a better way of putting it is that things stop seeming like "just" culture-war issues when society reaches a broad consensus that they're pressing (eg. New Deal, BLM.)

I'd say a longer cycle than that. Moral politics seems to take over in generations who grow up in peace and prosperity. Practical ones comes back in those growing up in hard times. Which roughly corresponds to the cycle of religious / moral /social awakenings in history. /1

        1. The Great Awakening fuels intense moral and cultural politics up to the American Revolution. Then after the horror of war, American politics gets very practical during the early republic. /2

I think that's maybe part of it. Part of it is also that a crisis requires a response and Trump is incapable of such. He's a marketer; the only thing he knows how to do is spin and when that doesn't work he's left with nothing.

People are made to realise the need for competent leadership in a crisis. They suddenly want someone reliable.

Been too long since I read this. Saying that "prosperity" was why there was a revival of the Klan in the 1920's doesn't explain how it got started during the global economic depression after the Panic of 1873, so I need to look at Hofstadter again.

The reality TV presidency demands new episodes to maintain interest, yet Trump’s culture war material is old and stale as well. To surprise us, Trump could declare that he’s against liver and Lima beans, and that Jefferson Davis should stop doing standup and retire.
