There are some real parallels between how Hoover & Trump responded to crisis (denial of problem, we're about to turn a corner, blame governors, blame foreigners, attack protestors). But, yes, Hoover made much more of an effort to solve, as ineffective as his response was.

Hoover’s response was couched in his own experience—cajoling the wealthy and powerful to feed a war-ravaged Europe—and ideology—unfettered capitalism—but at least it was a response!

thing was, Hoover was an effective Cabinet member under two Presidents, and oversaw WWI and post-war relief efforts that saved millions. He *had* good manager skills... but terrible decision-making skills... https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2017/10/23/hating-on-herbert-hoover …

Exactly. Try and imagine Trump managing this crisis. I can’t even picture him running a meeting about it.

My understanding is Hoover and his admin tried to stave off the depression, it's just that their efforts we're based on deeply, fatally flawed economic beliefs and assumptions

Trump is not capable of solving a problem like this. I have never thought he was joking or exaggerating all the times he has said directly or hinted that be doesn’t understand what Covid-19 is. He literally doesn’t get it.

Root problem is Trump can only care about a topic if he can plausibly “own” it. He has zero experience or knowledge about pandemics (ingesting Lysol and UV rays didn’t go so well), so he’s done with it. And he gets jealous if others do have expertise (Fauci), so he kneecaps them.

Right-Wing think tanks love blaming Hoover for trying to do anything at all to ease the depression. They worship the ground Coolidge walked on.
