Corey Robin deserves credit for nailing early on that Trump could end up resembling Jimmy Carter in his weakness. A little more than 4 months out from the election, it sure looks like that. Only problem: Biden is no Ronald Reagan. More like Hubert Humphrey cued up to win in '68.

Serious question, though: what happens if either one of them turns out to be unfit (not to put too fine a point on it) to campaign?

It's a risk. But it's not even clear what kind of campaign we're going to have, with COVID cases rising through the summer. That could make this the least physically and mentally taxing presidential campaign in many decades.

Between the two most mentally fragile candidates we've ever had.

For better or worse, the American voters have never discriminated against mentally fragile politicians.

You know perfectly well what I mean (and it's not that).

Just pulling your leg. But in all seriousness: it is a problem with that the American president has so much power and partisan polarization means people will support even manifestly unfit candidates.

Of course I hope I'm wrong about Biden. But I don't think there's anything unique to the US either about manifestly unfit candidates - think López Obrador & Bolsonaro - or radical polarization where, in the hemisphere, Canada, Costa Rica, & Uruguay seem to be the only exceptions.

The thing with Biden is that he has a network of people around him who will ground him and he is much more willing than Trump to defer to expert advice. I think we'll have a placeholder presidency, which many people seem to want.

Then placeholder point is part of what I meant with my tweet last night about Biden being like Humphrey in 1968. But also that Humphrey would have been overwhelmed by the countercultural left, which is a risk with Biden, too. Though I recognize that you prob see that as a bonus.

I should clarify though that I don't think Biden will cave to the "countercultural left" if by that you mean the abolish police & take down statues people. But he is likely to give some hearing to left-wing part of his coalition (Sanders, AOC etc.)

On domestic policy, I agree completely. On foreign policy, the liberal interventionists are virtually certain to rule the roost.
