Corey Robin deserves credit for nailing early on that Trump could end up resembling Jimmy Carter in his weakness. A little more than 4 months out from the election, it sure looks like that. Only problem: Biden is no Ronald Reagan. More like Hubert Humphrey cued up to win in '68.

Serious question, though: what happens if either one of them turns out to be unfit (not to put too fine a point on it) to campaign?

It's a risk. But it's not even clear what kind of campaign we're going to have, with COVID cases rising through the summer. That could make this the least physically and mentally taxing presidential campaign in many decades.

Between the two most mentally fragile candidates we've ever had.

For better or worse, the American voters have never discriminated against mentally fragile politicians.

Just pulling your leg. But in all seriousness: it is a problem with that the American president has so much power and partisan polarization means people will support even manifestly unfit candidates.

Of course I hope I'm wrong about Biden. But I don't think there's anything unique to the US either about manifestly unfit candidates - think López Obrador & Bolsonaro - or radical polarization where, in the hemisphere, Canada, Costa Rica, & Uruguay seem to be the only exceptions.

I think that's fair -- I live under Rob Ford's Toronto! I'd add Italy to the list. It is an interesting that having a stolid character is valued by only a few voters.

Yes, I had no space to include Europe, but yes, indeed: Italy, Hungary, Poland, Belarus, and Russia. Possibly France too, since one should not count out Marine Le Pen.
