1. The current Black Lives Matter moment is, I think, sparking a revival of interest in Spike Lee, who has been making films, many of the great, about racism & Black resilience for decades. I recently rewatched Do the Right Thing & it's as masterful as ever.

Don’t agree. It’s not good. Part of that uneven output you mentioned

Delroy Lindo's best role. Shockingly good.

Da 5 Bloods is a bottom-tier Spike Lee movie; it's incoherent and reactionary. Delroy (and the whole game cast!) deserved better. DTRT is definitely a classic. But I wonder why people sleep on Clockers, arguably one Spike's best and most complex movies?

Very smart piece. Surprised didn’t mention Malcolm X (the film). It’s one of his more conventional films in mny respects, but also, as you imply, central to Lee’s oeuvre and world view.
