1. The current Black Lives Matter moment is, I think, sparking a revival of interest in Spike Lee, who has been making films, many of the great, about racism & Black resilience for decades. I recently rewatched Do the Right Thing & it's as masterful as ever.

3. Lee's latest, Da 5 Bloods, is a strong movie & revisits many of the themes of Do The Right Thing. Some more thoughts on the movie & Lee's larger career:https://www.thenation.com/article/culture/spike-lee-5-bloods/ …

Has he lost his touch? Da 5 Bloods is not good. And BlacKkKlansman, even though it was nominated for an oscar, wasn't nearly as good as it could have and should have been. No one can take away from him though the clear masterpieces in his catalogue and the diversity of his work.

I don’t think he is underrated in the film world, personally. He’s a genius and pretty much people know it.

he's also one of the most expressionistic/least "realistic" of major directors; he uses dream, monologue, direct-to-camera address, etc. in ways that most straightforward narrative films don't.
