So, I'm listening to the audiobook of the David Michaelis biography of Charles Schulz and he mentions a sequence where Snoopy gives an anti-draft speech at the Daisy Hills Puppy Farm and is tear-gassed and hit with a dog dish (?!).pic.twitter.com/5EGLf0n5ak

      Would you recommend that book?

Yeah, I absolutely would. The audio version is abridged, but I read the full deal when it came out. It's definitely a bio with a "thesis," but it's great. Worth tracking down son, Monte Schulz's, reply to it as well--published in The Comics Journal I think.

I had a review in that issue of TCJ. There is a lot of good in Michaelis but he misses a lot too -- Schulz's wide reading (which informed Peanuts) and aesthetic sensibility get short shrift.

Yes, it's surprising how little he discusses the actual *drawing*--the craft of cartooning, and the particular innovations of Peanuts--beyond the initial character designs. My offhand guess is that's b/c it doesn't really factor into his "thesis."

Not at all steeped in the tradition of comics, so doesn't understand what Schulz was doing. It's the biography of an artist by someone who does not appreciate the art.

One of the great "oh no" moments of my life was spending an hour talking to Monte Schulz about that book and then realizing after hanging up that my tape recorder was broken.

Oh, maaaaannnnn. Did he have stuff to say that was beyond the stuff from that giant TCJ "rebuttal"?

Is there a book, or other reading, that does cover this territory well? For someone not steeped in art history/theory/etc., or same for comics.

I sure don't know of another with Schulz... which is why, despite its faults, I think the Machaelis bio is still definitely something to read.
