Trump has created a roadmap for how an authoritarian president can govern virtually unchecked even with an opposition party controlling the House. USA is lucky that Trump is so incompetent & will likely lose. But next authoritarian in the White House might not be so incompetent

Nobody really did much to rein in the presidency in the 80s/90s/00s though...

They passed some legislation to do so in the 70s and Congress did a fair job of checking Carter, but Reagan reminded us we love a monarch...

Republicans in the 70s had faith they could still win through the democratic process. They don’t believe that any longer. But they still believe they’re right. That’s a combination made for authoritarianism.

Your response made me think of the civility of Bob Michel and Jerry Ford. Trumpists and Newters would say, "Those losers!" They govern in bad faith.

Changing it would require some constitutional amendments. Any you have to recommend?

That’s the thing, it wouldn’t. The AUMF, for example, allows the President to bypass Congress in declaring war. Congress could repeal it and that would be a hell of a check on the imperial presidency. /1

Is there a system available which is immune to the soft authoritarianism of the populist right ? Countries with systems and cultures as diverse as Brazil, Hungary, Israel, and India are falling to populist authoritarians.

If there’s one lesson we should all take from the past couple of decades, it’s that the authoritarian mindset is not exclusive to people of any one political bent.
