    Jeet Heer Retweeted Andrew Sullivan

Robert Lowell's great poem "For the Union Dead" is about the the all-Black 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the formation of which was pivotal for reasons that Sullivan's blinkered view of history prevents him from seeing.https://twitter.com/sullydish/status/1274012867839365120 …

    Jeet Heer added,

    Andrew Sullivan @sullydish
Lincoln, and the hundreds of thousands of war dead in the Union, did not free the slaves. In fact, the Union dead barely feature in this version of history. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/18/opinion/juneteenth-slavery-freedom.html?referringSource=articleShare …

This is correct. And he's become so accustomed to his blinkered view that he cannot take off the blinders, even for a minute, even to read Jamelle's column as a useful corrective & filling-in of the details, without wanting to put them back on immediately.

That's a banal generalization that explains everything and hence nothing. People have agency and the drivers of action abolition was slaves, via slave revolts.

i just love how all the "facts dont care about your coddled, postmodern feelings" pundits have mental breakdowns every time some historical figure or fact is subjected to even mildest scrutiny

You know what's also funny? The same people who say "you can't judge them by the standards of today" typically think "Judeo-Christian values" are immutable. Like, which is it? Does morality evolve or not?

Jesus. Sullivan is so easy to refute we don’t need to drag Lowell into this.
