The confederacy has been gone for 150. It obviously retains cultural ans political relevance. This is a weird take!

Sure but there are many more neo-Confederates in America than there are tankies.

I might invite you into my mentions the next time I discuss what my experience in the USSR in 1985 was like. There appears to be a disturbing amount of revisionist history going on in some leftist circles and denial about the USSR having been an authoritarian surveillance state.

Well, I think tankies are a case -- not the only one -- where social media allows a small committed group to present themselves as much larger than they are in real life.

And what about those who celebrate or defend those who followed in Soviet Communism's wake? I still see lots of Che shirts

Maybe! But you are also a college professor and are thus around a more at risk population

I work out of a college campus (or did pre-Covid) and I haven't seen Che shirts in at least 10 years. I mean, I'm sure they exist but doesn't seem super pressing.

Not only is it not pressing but Che shirts are as relevant as a young bartender wearing a Ramones shirt. There is zero familiarity with the subject by the person wearing the shirt. It’s just a style.

I'm constantly shocked by all the shirts I see endorsing masked vigilante violence -- by which I mean Batman and Spider-Man.

Don't equate the two. Batman had a much harder edge. Spiderman always tried to turn perps over to the cops (and did all he could to avoid letting people die, even bad people).

Spider-Man = monopoly on legitimate use of masked vigilante violence
