Gen X here. Immigrant (Brit -> Canada) I don’t think the Soviet Union is per se, but we do vividly remember the Cold War, CND, Threads and more. The threat of a nuclear apocalypse was pervasive.

I'm not sure I see it that way either. Seems like a niche concern even among people who are older, not something that "haunts" too many Americans. Remember when people made fun of Romney in 2012 for saying that Russia was his chief foreign policy concern?

Hmm. I initially thought maybe it was different for me bc I grew up in Europe but my (Canadian) partner’s experience is similar to mine. I wonder if it’s because this all occurred before 9/11 burst the safety bubble most Americans lived in?
