The Soviet Union has been dead for nearly 30 years now. Yet it still haunts the imagination of many Americans, both liberal & conservative. That's strange.

Right, but the Confederacy matters because of how it shaped the political and policy trends that led to the present, not simply because of the present number of its uncritical political devotees. Similarly, the Soviet Union had a tremendous impact on world history and ours.

Fair enough! Still, back in 1991 it really felt like Leninism was not just defeated by now only of antiquarian interest (Fukuyama's End of History essay caught that mood). So the persistent afterlife always surprises me.

I might invite you into my mentions the next time I discuss what my experience in the USSR in 1985 was like. There appears to be a disturbing amount of revisionist history going on in some leftist circles and denial about the USSR having been an authoritarian surveillance state.

I am not convinced of this. Actual neo-Confederates are pretty rare. Having a less jaundiced view of the Confederacy is all too common, but these are different things.
