yeah my objection was i don’t know that this is the best context but it seems like the one that’s resorted to because it’s very rhetorically potent and charged, and maybe a larger problem is always putting things in the most dire possible terms

welllll i mean that’s true but my reaction to that piece in the moment was written was like jesus christ they are trying to justify martial law and shooting people down so i can’t really sympathize with the idea that a fierce response to it was the real illiberal menace

speaking of context that op ed appeared in an extremely heated moment and was very incendiary it’s not surprising it got a strong response, i would’ve put my objection in different terms but i totally get it

Also, according to Ben Smith's reporting, the objection is specific to be legally protected, as later pointed out by their union, i.e. you can't separate the discourse 'coercion' from the capital and labor coercion that runs parallel to it.pic.twitter.com/xLlefElleV

Exactly. Safetyism language is a function of labor laws. There's very little free speech in most workplaces & this is rare area of leverage. People who whine endless about cancel culture don't generally care about restrictions at will employment imposes on speech.

I don't think that's quite accurate, Jeet. I haven't looked at this rigorously, but my strong impression is that safetyism emerged out of campus Title IX enforcement parameters.
