Three theories of how we get to an independent mass workers party in the US: 1) Dem realignment: expel capitalist elements or bring them to heel. 2) Clean break: don't touch Dems, start our own party now. 3) Dirty break: run on Dem ballot line as we build constituency for a break

In theory this works, in practice it's much harder, here in Oregon a super majority of the party supports open primaries which would give young people a much louder voice, leadership blocked it, including some "progressive allies."
-
States like NY and CA are even harder to force change in.

Sir, The template to unite a fractious party and push it to an extreme has already been provided in the person of Donald Trump.
-
Trump won the election and got to push through some big promises. I'd like to see the left do the same.

Valid position! All three are, though I favor the third because I don't imagine the capitalist class will voluntarily relinquish such a valuable asset as a major party, and I think the energy it would take to drive them out is comparable to the energy it would take to start anew
-
But the third option stipulates that we should not start anew until we've significantly increased our power, profile, etc, which means the strategies for 1 and 3 are going to look similar up to a certain point
