The reporting in this story about Shor is important and what happened to him is a travesty. Almost all narratives about PC are hysterical centrist bed-wetting, but in this case there is a genuine wrong.https://twitter.com/jonathanchait/status/1271076001615929346 …

You can argue over who was responsible for McCarthyism and if Truman should be a hero. That doesn't mean Mccarthyism was not illiberal. FDR bears some blame for internment of Japanese Americans, but that internment is still illiberal.

A liberal did X, does not mean X is compatible with liberalism. Liberalism is a set of principles, its not the sum of all actions done by liberals. Ditto for Marxism, etc.

Truman expressed regret for letting McCarthy push him around. Of course he also erred in the other direction by defending Alger Hiss, an actual Soviet spy.

What I'm specifically thinking about beyond McCarthy is the creation of the loyalty oaths and the continued empowerment of J. Edgar Hoover. Spies were few very few. Tens of Thousands of New Dealers were purged. This is a good book on it.https://books.google.ca/books?id=umlPTJksNdUC&pg=PA364&dq=new+deal+purge+red+scare&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj71JLz44TqAhV4gnIEHdQODhIQ6AEIKDAA#v=onepage&q=new%20deal%20purge%20red%20scare&f=false …
