The inability of many progressive outlets -- including, before a stealth correction, the Times itself! -- to accurately convey the content of the Cotton op-ed is revealing. I've had my own encounters with this style, which runs against what I view as key journalistic valuespic.twitter.com/5mUTDpe1te

      Jeet Heer Retweeted Tom Cotton

Cotton literally tweeted out that the army give "no quarter" to "insurrectionists." So a bigger problem is that most outlets (progressive or not) actually understate how dangerous his ideas are.https://twitter.com/TomCottonAR/status/1267459561675468800 …

And, if necessary, the 10th Mountain, 82nd Airborne, 1st Cav, 3rd Infantry—whatever it takes to restore order. No quarter for insurrectionists, anarchists, rioters, and looters. https://twitter.com/jamiedupree/status/1267456995017318401 …

Why do you think that peaceful protesters were "insurrectionists"?

"no quarter" means rules of engagement would include executing prisoners. Is that acceptable?

It's totally unacceptable. Maybe a reason not to publish him or to force him to address that in the piece. Doesn't change what was in the piece though, or the this dynamic where outlets just misrepresent stuff during moments of outrage.

The tweet came out before the piece and the fact that he presented a toned down version for the Times means the op ed as published allowed him white wash his actual position

that may be, but again, it doesn't change what was in the column. saying that journalists should respond to what someone actually wrote just seems like a very low and reasonable bar, and one that a lot of people have been tripping over lately

But Cotton wrote the tweet too -- and before the column ran. That's one reason why people responded as they did. You can't treat the column as a stand-alone thing that can only be addressed in isolation. Life is not a debate club.
