I feel like you’re smart enough to know that how people answer that question is not the same as they’d answer “are you in favor of defunding the police” and that’s entirely the problem with the slogan

Just imagine, you see someone in need and there is a -11 number to call for social workers/crisis helpers/shelters. That (among many other things) is what defunding the police means to me

Everybody loves the fire department. Probably cities will transfer funding to fire departments until they start throwing people out windows. Then the pendulum will swing back to the police.

seems asking about support for specific policies is better than encouraging people to use slogan that means different things to different people, including its supporters.

I know cops who would support a budget cut if it meant people trained in say mental health responded to mental health calls that cops now respond to.
