Not saying it's justified but the distinction people make is between those who thought that slavery is inherited evil which will one day be abolished (the consensus view of the Founders) & those who thought it is a positive good which should expand (the Confederate view).

Yes, even in their transcripts/notes of discussion for the Constitution, various of its authors noted that slavery was declining and they expected (hoped) it would be gone before 1800. The Louisiana Purchase and the cotton gin changed that.

Correct. In fact, the number of slave states *increased* from 6 to 15 between 1790 and 1860 because the cotton gin increased demand for labor. https://www.archives.gov/education/lessons/cotton-gin-patent … Prior, slavery was actually increasingly unprofitable and expected to larely die out a natural death.
