I disagree with many of Chait’s conclusions here but Civis Analytics’ treatment of David Shor for sharing an empirical analysis that shows riots tend to push voters to the right is absolutely ridiculoushttps://nymag.com/intelligencer/2020/06/case-for-liberalism-tom-cotton-new-york-times-james-bennet.html …

Important parts of this discussion, imo. 1) The analysis in question - of events half a century ago - doesn't seem to be lining up with data on this particular situation in any way. 2) It was always highly dubious that it would. 3) Critics on those grounds were simply correct.

Ok but even if he’s totally wrong (and the scale of violence here is way way way smaller the 1967-68) it’s not a reason to fire him.

Agree with Adam. And I don't buy the argument that the data from today's protests don't line up with Wasow's work. There's been relatively little looting/rioting after the first few days. And the brutality of the cops' response to nonviolent protests has shifted public opinion.

The cops were pretty brutal in the 1960s -- even more so than now, I think. The Chicago police riot was televised but public opinion was on their side.

White people are more progressive on race than they were in the 1960s. That’s really the difference.

That's the big difference and also Black Lives Matter has done amazing work changing the discourse so when the crisis broke people were ready to shift.

I agree with Adam on the general point, but it's more complicated than that. The broader public was less supportive of Bull Connor or Tom Clark than they were of the cops in Chicago, even though the former were beating up black protesters, and the latter mostly white ones.

I think the 1968 police riot at the Democratic convention is where, in a lot of ways, you can see the culture war emerge in full bloom.
