8. You might think that missing the biggest scandal in USA history because you trusted an obviously interested source would hurt your career. But Frankel in fact did what the Times expected of him. And he was rewarded for it. Eventually became executive editor

Was this in the 80s around the time of Spy magazine? I remember them mercilessly mocking a NYT columnist and I think it was him.

Lately Rosenthal has a lot of competition for title of worst columnist. My young adult son was surprised when I said last night I used to read NYT A1 first & then the editorial pages. Have hardly looked at those ed pages in years & apparently he skips them, too.
