I see the establishment as a faction -- I suppose we can quibble if it's a partisan faction. But definitely opposed to a wide swath of politics on both left and right.

Also it’s the strain of having two competing medias: a mainstream one that strove for the impossible View From Nowhere, and a far right propaganda machine that masquerades as news. To do the first one correctly is to constantly refute the second, which then gets called bias.

It’s fairly telling that the age of “nonpartisan media” lines up so well with the beginning of the Cold War. Were there any particular political stances that were verboten on the nonpartisan media?

Has this ever changed? Or rather do we just redefine with shifts in power the in-group getting those opportunities and platforms? There’s an ongoing shift in who has power in certain institutions, not in how things work.
