Would fit in with your work very well, especially The Machivellians (1943) which really tried to recast democracy in the narrowest terms possible (as a regime that allows dissent of loyal opposition and some circulation of elites).

Yeah, Burnham was formally a Trotskyite in those years. But even so, I think signs of his distrust of democracy were present even then -- I'd be curious what research could find. There hasn't really been a first-rate analysis of him and I think he deserves it.
