Ehhhhhhhh. as far as we can tell, policing has had only marginal effects on lowering crime rates over the past 15 years or so. crime fell EVERYWHERE — in cities that stopped and frisked AND in cities that didn't, in cities in the US, Canada, and Europe. No one knows why.https://twitter.com/sullydish/status/1268918913766744068 …

Sharkey said in his book that NYC's crime drop was *larger* than other cities and that might be because of stop-and-frisk, but crime has continued to fall in NYC even after S&F was (mostly) rolled back.

some people believe that removing lead form everything was a major driver of the crime drop. there have been other, uh, colorful theories around abortion access (fewer unwanted children leading to less delinquency) and technology (you can't stick ppl up if they don't carry cash.)

but don't get it twisted: if Sullivan was subjected to the kind of policing the average Black dude in Brownsville is/was, he would rightly see it as the moral catastrophe it is.

but people — white people — WANT Black people to be policed this way, which why we're still having conversations about the necessity of police and the dangers of NOT INCREASING POLICE BUDGETS at a time when crime is at or near the lowest rates on record.

Sullivan has always been invested in the project of social control/marginalization of Black people. Let's not perfume his motivations.
