The book was written in the wake of the 1960s and I think that caused Bailyn to identify a bit with the Tory gentry under siege from scruffy radicals.

Yea nice try, but Bailyn is FAR from the only historian who has offered a sympathetic portrayal of Loyalists and the British over the past 50 years. They were a group with a one-sided interpretation for centuries and historians post-1960 hate that.
