Fortunate timing, too. In 2008 it was McCain flailing in response to the financial collapse, and in 2012 it was Mitt and his 47 percent speech. I think Biden's going to benefit from circumstances in a much bigger way.

Which is funny because anyone who remembers the 2008 campaign coverage, right up the end, it was an endless discussion about how Obama "can't seem to close the deal"

The narrative seemed to be that was...Obama was weak, soft...a lot of puff. He wasn't tough like Hillary. He didn't know how to throw a punch. It dominated coverage during the DNC days 1-3. It wasn't until Obama's speech at Invesco Field when that finally died down.
