Reading up on the late 19th century Populist & again struck by the fact that the loony, whack-a-doodle hayseeds wanted a fiat currency but the sound, sober, educated responsible elite wanted the gold standard. And as it turns out, the loons were right.

I'd imagine that fiat currency would be a much bigger conceptual leap for people at that time; bimetallism accomplished the purpose without taking that leap of faith.
