Talk to some black people alive in 1968 & ask them about how great the economic boom was for them.https://twitter.com/HeerJeet/status/1266577385966600192 …

People are emphasizing the differences with 1968, which is fair enough. But some of those differences cut against 2020. Uprisings of 1968 took place near peak of long economic boom with rising expectations. Young of 2020 are far more alienated from the economy.

Not to be facetious, but it was actually pretty good, wasn't it?? Thought the best years for wage growth among black workers were right around then, as industrial unions finally stopped discriminating, the War on Poverty kicked in & overall economy was still going pretty strong.

It wasn’t. They were paying exorbitant rents for hovels, were redlined, schools were still segregated, the legal system was still tremendously stacked against them, they hadn’t amassed much power, & they were being killed by cops & in Vietnam

Um, "they were being killed by cops" -- that's different from now in what way?

The "and Viet Nam" part plays pretty heavy here.

You realize that the longest wars in American history are still going on and the army recruits disproportionately from POC?

You realize there is a difference between a volunteer army and one where everyone is forced to join (though the rich, like Trump, somehow manage to get out?)

Economics is its own sort of draft. The military, my understanding is, is even more disproportionately staffed with POC than in 1960s. And the trauma and death of soldiers in a volunteer army is also regrettable.

This is simply not the same. Not even an apples to oranges comparison...more like apples to fish or rubber cement. After the Tet offensive, & after the body bags...a draft notice was pure terror. It's why GWBush, Cheney, & Trump used everything at their disposal to not serve.

Sure, because of the draft people like you had to care about war. Now with volunteer army USA can have nearly 20 years of war, disproportionately fought by POC, and public doesn't care. To my eyes, that makes current situation worse.
