So my good friend @mahler3 and I have decided to rewatch the filmography of Stanley Kubrick. So far we've watched: - Killer's Kiss - The Killing - Paths of Glory - Spartacus A few thoughts

Killer's Kiss is a rather slight film that still offers a preview of Kubrick's unique film vision. The story is not all that compelling but visually you start to see the brilliant use of scale that would define Kubrick's later work

The Killing is a better movie with intricate plotting and some great acting performances, particularly from Sterling Hayden. There are some notable flaws, particularly a bizarre gangland shootout that doesn't make any sense, but still Noir film-making at its best.

Paths of Glory is a revelation - maybe the best anti-war movie I've ever seen. Here you see the attributes that defined Kubrick's best film-making - the use of scale; brilliant tracking shots; and unique camera perspectives.

The war footage is extraordinary, particularly for when it was made - 1957. I honestly am not sure how he captured some of these shots. And this tracking shot of Douglas walking through the trenches is simply extraordinaryhttps://twitter.com/tcm/status/1235611209040187394?lang=en …

A memorable tracking shot follows Col. Dax (Kirk Douglas) in the trenches, then taking his soldiers over the top for the assault, in Stanley Kubrick's PATHS OF GLORY ('58). pic.twitter.com/3Oibi4YfJO

There's a recurrent theme in these Kubrick films of using scale to capture the idea of powerlessness - of man being manipulated by forces beyond his control. Numerous scenes in Paths capture that sentiment ... and then turn this idea completely on its head with the final scene

The anti-war sentiments of incredibly powerful. So many war movies convey the notion that war erodes your basic humanity; and few films show it more convincingly than Paths.

Finally, a word on Spartacus - meh. This is a very un-Kubrickian film & while there are some great performances (Ustinov, Olivier & Laughton) it's undercut by a dull & overly sentimental script. Douglas is the weak link here, not because of his acting, but his scripted dialogue

There are some great set pieces - the prison break, the battle scene, the bath scene with Olivier and Curtis, the long march of the slaves - but it cant make up for an overly sentimental and cliched portrayal of Spartacus and his revolt

The sentimental stuff is all from Douglas, Fast, and Trumbo. Kubrick didn't really have a free hand.

          More an Anthony Mann film.

Exactly. I've read that he hated the Spartacus character and fought with Trumbo and Douglas to make him appear more flawed. What's interesting about the film is that the Romans are so much more interesting and nuanced
