    1. Vice-presidential picks, unless they are truly disastrous (Eagleton, Palin), don't count much in elections. But they are important for unifying parties and allowing them to function as coalitions.

        2. The 2016 election is instructive: Trump's pick of Pence was a smart move: it ensured the enthusiasm of evangelicals. They would have one of their own at the table. By contrast, Tim Kaine didn't have enough of a political profile distinct from Hillary Clinton to add anything

I'd argue they are more important when the candidates are elderly

I would argue that Tim Kaine was a more disastrous pick than Sarah Palin. Palin at least excited and united the Party for a while (the GOP was not going to win in '08 anyway). Kaine was an opportunity missed, and we all know what happened.

I think Palin might have been fine for that Republican base, but she was a disaster among swing voters. I remember the sentiment among a lot of people was “what the hell was McCain thinking picking her?!”

Vice presidential picks are also important because they are one of the few positions that can provide a launching pad to the presidency. With Biden being so old already, his choice of VP is especially critical, not from an electoral perspective but from a governing one.pic.twitter.com/jWa7DJnxyN

Recent history isn’t great on that score though.

Pence wasn't just an evangelical. He was also extremely aligned with the Koch network which refused to back Trump. It assuaged wealthy Republicans scared of Trump's protectionism.

Pence is faux evangelical he +many in this power movement are Christian Dominionists -that's why there is no separation of church & state. The Christian Doctrine of Discovery still resonates with this cabal, no pope no church just followers, even willing to die Rapture+Endtimes
