It's so bizarre. I feel like I'm in this weird world where half of the pundits see this as a warmup for Logan's run, and the other half are urging everyone to get in touch with their inner Howard Hughes. Maybe I'm the crazy one?

The adoption of survivalist-style batten-down-the-hatches mindset at the opposite end of the political spectrum where it normally resides has been something to behold.

People are scared of getting sick and dying from what has killed nearly 100,000 people in about 10 weeks and was the leading cause of mortality at its peak. I don’t think being a little neurotic under these circumstances is so impossibly weird and hard to understand.

Yeah I don’t exactly get it either, my natural reaction to “we don’t fully know how surface spread works” was then and is now to be extra cautious until we know more

I got Covid-19 before I had to worry about packages, so I personally didn’t do any of this. But I didn’t try to dissuade my parents from doing it or say, jeez you guys are being crazy.

I understand the instinct, especially in places where the virus is thick on the ground. It is a way to exert some control in uncertain time. I still maintain that it is notable how a set of more guarded, wary behavior has during this period flipped to being a feature of the left.

When has the right had a set of guarded behavior? I don’t think believing in Q 8 other conspiracies is “guarded” as much as batshit insane. But most of the time the right is shooting off guns, racing around in boats, mudding in ATVs etc around here.

I'm thinking here of the get-off-my-lawn, beware-the-dog, armed-and-dangerous, keep-your-distance type, as contrasted with the hale-fellow-well-met, love-thy-neighbor liberal.

Ok. But I think we are overblowing a few people’s behavior. I’m in the reddest part of a red state and everyone was wearing masks at the grocery store tonight altho not required. Lots of conservative female friends telling me they won’t go out other than necessary. So mixed bag.

Yes, I've thought all along that coverage & punditry have been understating common-sense health measures being taken in red-state America. I was deep in Tennessee at the start of all this and people were taking it very seriously even before the governor finally shut things down.

Agree that the red-state/blue-state framing that some have applied to this is bad and distorts what is happening on the ground.
