If George Saunders had been writing in the 60s, he'd have been someone Judith Merrill enthusiastically anthologized, to the bafflement of more "genre" sf readers, in her truly visionary annual collections of sf.https://twitter.com/MargaretAtwood/status/1261737882315874304 …

I'll never forget reading Julio Cortazar's "Continuity of Parks" in one of those Year's Best SF collections of hers: physically, the sheer bug-eyed WTF delight that such a thing existed. Doubt I knew the word "surrealism" yet.

Conversely, if Ray Bradbury had been a Brazilian writer, when his work was translated in the 1970s into English it would have been seen as a marvellous example of magic realism.

One odd thing about Bradbury, though, in light of that analogy, is that he was also something of a Saturday Evening Post regular. A magic realism of nostalgic Americana?

I'm not sure if this maps onto the displacements of genre you are talking about, but Borges' first publication in the USA was in Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine.
