because voters knew him. not just name recognition, but a solid sense of who he is. this could be seen in the primary as unfamiliar candidates were easily defined negatively while efforts to change perceptions of sanders and biden bounced off them.

They rallied around him after he crushed in SC and it became obvious that he would dominate in the south like Hillary did before him, even though there were indicators that he would for months prior (demographic polling etc).
