The other interesting question is why are British bands so much better than American bands - Beatles, Stones, Who, Zeppelin, U2, Kinks, Cream, etc And why does America turn out such better singer-songwriters? Anyone have a theory on this?https://twitter.com/speechboy71/status/1260393106177957891 …
Well, Dylan was the genius who emerged from the scene, but the scene itself was important. Lots of gifted but less spectacular talents were able to make a living in basket houses in those years.

Of course. And Dylan was grafting off Woody Guthrie and tons of others, but his influence was arguably the greatest and I suspect he had a huge impact on the evolution of the American singer/songwriter

Grafting?!? Muddy Waters=Stones, Cream. Buddy Holly, Orbison=Beatles. Punk=NY Dolls, Ramones, Velvets. Even Cliff Richard. Reggae/Ska=Specials. Music is all about grafting, mixing, etc. I point to Dylan's effect of the Beatles
