There's some fairly unsettling stuff from Didion's National Review years that never gets discussed. I'd be curious for a serious attempt to grapple with it.

He's not talking about Didion, but I've always read Michael Warner's take on Reagan in this vein: some people never really got what he represented. But once he won, it firmly communicated "no, this is who we are" to a segment of writers and it was really clarifying
