Let's be clear: re-opening the economy with liability protection means American workers are going to be given a choice of two ways to die: dying from starving (no unemployment insurance if they refuse dangerous work) or possibly dying from Covid-19.https://twitter.com/JaredHalpern/status/1255243405866815488 …

Okay I didn't see that. But for a large group it looks like the possibility of death is around one in a thousand, and you have to get the virus first. I don't know what the odds of getting it are so I can't come up with a final number.

Aside from the people who die, a much larger group gets a chronic condition which will shorten their life.

You may have to wait until those so afflicted die in their early 60s instead of late 70s or what have you.

Exactly -- we're only starting to figure out the condition of people with chronic conditions -- but it's definitely a thing. Previous pandemics had ripple effects that lasted for decades or (through epigenetic inheritance) centuries. This stuff is not a joke!

I don't have anything handy but have seen articles talking about the heavier health impacts (kidneys, lungs, etc.) seen in some "recovered" patients--articles couldn't say whether people would recover over a couple of years of be impaired for life.

All I would ask is that all public policy weighs the risks against the benefits, although many seem to be pretending that this is not the case now. We could bring the automobile death rate down to near zero with the right speed limit.

Well, as a Torontonian, don't get me started on lax traffic enforcement and unrealistically high city limits, but that aside, I notice a lot of catastophizing on the economic side in the US because "small government" or something.
