The consensus social science view is that disasters and emergencies make people more co-operative and pro-social. It's a Hollywood myth that most people become ultra-individualistic survivalists.

And easily so ! This isn’t like an obscure social science fact ! It’s been studied and researched thoroughly !

The opposite is universally the case. It does say something about both you and David Brooks though

The hoarders & people who ran out to buy guns would like to be recognized. Aside from Mass empathy for nurses & hospital workers what evidence is there to the contrary? The rush to "open up" is executive level selfishness. Perhaps you could point to someone like Chris smalls.,

80% of the public supports the lockdown. The "open up" brigade is a minority.

I could tell a Social Darwinian "just so" story that the groups of human that displayed more unselfishness and willingness to share in hard times survived at higher rates then humans who lived in groups where it became "every man & woman for him or herself."

Anyone who's lived through a major hurricane could have told Brooks that. The neighbors check in on each other. The powers out and everyone is grilling food that's going to go to waste. It's a testament to Brooks and Yglesias' sheltered lives that this is alien to them.
