There's room to ask whether hospitals have been too aggressive about delaying elective procedures, which can have serious health consequences. COVID-19 has been roughly as deadly as people feared. But, it has NOT resulted in as high a hospitalization rate as most projections.https://twitter.com/JustinWolfers/status/1255479750593859584 …

This is stunning: Nearly half of the Q1 decline in GDP can be attributed to healthcare, which is presumably delaying of elective procedures. It's a strange reality that in the midst of a pandemic, we have a healthcare-led recession. pic.twitter.com/G3IezQkEzX

My understanding is that even with hospitalization not as high as expected, you can't go forward with those elective procedures because there is much increased risk of contracting inside hospital, especially dangerous for anyone with heart disease, cancer, etc.

They will be stacked in the next months to make up for treatments and surgeries that were postponed. And COVID-19 is going to be far from gone in the next year.

Most hospitals don't have enough PPE to cover just COVID-19 cases

we have to find a way to segregate the hospitals, then. Can't postpone all procedures for over a year.

Speaking of a single data point, but in my hometown 1 hospital handles Coronavirus testing and cases and the other does elective surgeries. I don't know if this is common across the country though

The stated rationale here in Oregon was to preserve ppe and also ventilator capacity

That's why many cities have been able to have CV19 care facilities and non-CV19 care facilities. There are and should be facilities in metro areas where you can get treatment without any contact at all. The issue, as we've been told, is PPE, not infection.

Depends on the hospital. Some have separated out Covid-19 cases so well from other patients and have enough PPE that there's little to worry out. Others, not so much.
